Making Use of Songs In Cultural Teaching In Social Studies Classes

Summary/Abstract: In this study, the viewpoints of students were determined on gaining cultural acquisitions in Culture and Heritage field in Social Studies classes by making use of songs.The study was conducted at Eskişehir, Tepebaşı Central Country, 4th Grade class of a Ülkü Primary school in fall term of 2016-2017 academic year.The teaching practise, between October 24, 2016 and December 02, 2016 and lasted for 5 weeks. 20 students participated in the study. The participants were determined with the easily accessible sampling method. For this purpose, songs that were related with the acquisitions in the Culture and Heritage learning field in Social Studies classes were determined. Various activities in which songs were included were prepared and applied in classes. The data of the study were collected with semi-structured interview forms that were prepared in the context of qualitative research approach; and were analyzed by using the descriptive analysis technique. According to the study results, most of the students stated that they found the use of songs in Social Studies classes interesting, they learnt the classes better, they had difficulties in understanding some songs and they wanted to listen to more songs after the education with songs activity.
