Summary/Abstract: The author of this article points to a number of different issues underlying the contemporary media law. There is no doubt that that the number of such issues will exponentially grow along with the prospective developments in the means of mass communication, the general technological development and the emergence of new types of media. The most important issues which are the essence of media law are: journalists’ rights and duties (especially the free access to information), creating an independent media policy, the importance of the European Court of Human Rights, the fundamental rights and responsibilities of journalists, etc. Freedom of public information primarily includes the right to seek and impart truthful, timely and objective information. Namely, freedom of expression is the basic presumption for exercising all other rights while the principle of veracity is the presumption for exercising the right to public information. The violation of this principle is the most common ground for initiating legal action against the media, their editors and journalists. Unfortunately, nowadays we may encounter some media reports which may be qualified as a deliberate placement of false, unverified and misleading information.
