EVLİYA ÇELEBİ SEYAHATNAMESİNDE MUŞ VE ÇEVRESİ
Muş and Its Surrounding in Evliya Çelebi’s Seyahatname

Summary/Abstract: Muş is not a commonly mentioned city in literary, historical or resource books. We can rarely come across with the name Muş in resource books. One of the most important books giving information about Muş’s history and sociological structure is Evliya Çelebi’s Seyahatname. Popular traveller of the 17th century Evliya Çelebi travelled more than forty years across almost everywhere where Ottoman Empire reigned, and compiled the experiences and knowledge he had gained in his ten-volume work ‘Seyahatname’. Being a civil servant as well as a traveller, Evliya Çelebi reflected the information about the places he saw during his travels in his work by adding his own comments. One of the cities that Evliya Çelebi visited and gave information in his work is Muş city. In this study, starting from Seyahatname which is the most important of its kind, information about Muş and its surrounding in the 17th century from Evliya Çelebi’s eyes will be examined and the importance of the city for the region will be identified.
