Summary/Abstract: This contribution confronts the published critical reflections on McEwan’s “On Chesil Beach” novel. The works determine morphological and semantic epicentre in relation to the image of newlyweds’ failed attempts to establish a physical bond. The study refers to the variable nature of events’ semanticcore. It means that the centre is not embodied by the non-functional physical relationship but rather bythe lack of interpersonal communication. Such a failure is caused by the limitations of main characters’ individual wishes and their inability to go beyond these limits in favour of spending their lives together. The characters insist on their initial standpoints and their relationship is devolved by the following rhetorical excesses rather than by unsatisfying wedding night. “On Chesil Beach” can also be perceived as the author´s stylistic breakthrough, associated with his abandonment of the macabre writing style. In conclusion, the contribution reacts to the indirect discussion between two literary reviewers (L. Šenkýřik and G. Lukáč) and their significantly different interpretations of the scene from Florence’s childhood.
