Summary/Abstract: The study draws on fundamental concepts of structural semiotics and communication aesthetics in order to analyse potentiality of the texts of literary realism for the production of meaning and meaningful communication. Texts of literary realism are approached as semiotically heterogeneous entities and flexible and dynamic unities of the signifié and the significant, which are re-established in the process of reading (signification). Interrelationships of expression levels and semantic complexes of realistic fiction (signs) are examined to explicate various alternatives and forms of representation in this type of aesthetic communication. The study aims at clarification and making the ways of modelling a characteristic hierarchy of thematic (composition) and linguistic (stylisation) components of a realistic text more comprehensible. Focus is on the combinations of both aspects of the sign (signifier/signified) that take part in the constitution of organizing dominant structural principle. In the study, some of theoretical approaches and concepts concerning realistic fiction, derived predominantly from Slovak literary studies and criticism, are highlighted.
