Tactical and Strategic Potential of Reactive Statements of American Teenagers

Summary/Abstract: Any kind of communication is determined by the need of a certain goal achievement and the recipient’s behavior regulation. As a result, a speaker plans his speech according to a definite strategy. The concept of strategy is borrowed from a field of military art. It contains a set of tools and methods which are necessary so that a speaker’s communicative goals can be achieved, or the speech-world model of a recipient can be changed.. The study deals with reactive expressions as components of the communicative strategy. The subject of research is pragmatic characteristics of reactive statements. Its aim is to single out and analyze the tactics and strategies used by the American teenagers in reactive remarks. The latter can be divided into cooperative and confrontational ones.
