An Analysis of Post WW II German Literature within the Context of Literature Sociology

Summary/Abstract: In this article, the social, political and economic problems of the post -World War II Germany will be addressed and the pursuit of new form and content Germany, which made a beginning in every field, practiced in the field of literature will be discussed. In the first section, the sociological possibility of literature will be emphasized, in the second section the socio-political and economic status of Germany in the post-war period will be presented and in the third section the modernist attitude in the choice of form and subject of post war German literature will be studied. In this innovation period, on the one hand literature was regarded as a settling account with destruction caused by Nazi years and on the other hand it functioned as the “processing of the past” (Erinnerungsarbeit) and the defense of new values. The article puts emphasis on how environmental conditions shape literature and it attempts to demonstrate that literature may be a mine of data concerning socio-political condition of the period. In this regard, the basic acceptance of the article is that society can be read through literature as literature is nourished by society.
