Summary/Abstract: The article shows how many ambiguities there still are in relation to defining the scope of information, as well as the choice of the manner of its communication, and the moment at which one ‘can’ or ‘should’ talk to children (or in their presence) about gender, body and sexuality. This is a result of the sexual norm adopted by the educators, from the belief regarding what is consistent with a person’s ‘correct’ psychosexual development, and what with the ‘danger of sexualisation’. The author emphasises that despite the consent ‘imparted’ to the parents, and their ‘entitled’ authority, they lack the knowledge and tools, while the public debate is outdoing itself in suggesting content to them and forming their attitudes. There is an evident far-reaching gulf between the prerogatives due to parents on the grounds of cultural rules, and the educational competences in sexual development and perception of social roles and sexual identities, and after all a child’s sex education occurs above all via invisible and unnoticed objects and content.
