Summary/Abstract: The term „hypersexuality” is just one of many names for „unrestrained sexual desire”. It is still hard to find a precise definition for this elevated level of sexual expression. In contemporary research three theoretical approaches dominate: sexual addiction, sexual compulsivity and dysregulation in the control system relating to sexuality. Each of these highlights different features which are essential in order to understand the disorder fully and correctly. Nevertheless, all of them point to the harmful consequences of sexual behavior and high level of suffering in the hypersexual population. On the one hand, impaired sexual behavior is a cause of the high level of shame, on the other hand, on the other hand, repeated behavior is reinforced due to orgasm. These facts reduce patient’s ability to break out of the vicious circle of the hypersexual disorder. Some research demonstrate that there is a wide correlation between hypersexuality and other disorders, such as: depression, alcohol addiction or anxiety disorders. This, in turn, indicates that there is a need for proper diagnosis followed by therapeutic intervention. The current classifications of mental disorders do not contain a separate category for „hypersexual disorder”. This situation will change with the upcoming DSM – V classification.
