Summary/Abstract: The article discusses commercialization as an essential characteristic of contemporary art, related not only to popular culture but also to so-called “high” art. The author looks for ways in which art can emancipate itself from its direct dependence on the market through networks of foundations that, while varying in their objectives and interests, are willing to finance art projects. Still, taking too much account of these sources of funding may likewise be a kind of commercialization.
