Summary/Abstract: The article aims at verifying how translators of Andrzej Bursa’s poemsinto English realize their tasks and their roles as stated (explicitly or implicitly) in their prefaces. Two editions of translations have been analyzed: Selected Poems. Utwory wybrane by American professors Kevin Christianson and Halina Abłamowicz (Kraków 2008) and Killing Auntie & Other Work by Wiesiek Powaga (London 2009). Alongside the declarations from the prefaces, translations of selected poems were taken into consideration – when possible, two versions were compared. In the context of the translator’s role an overview is offered of the vital differences between the two volumes, and conclusions are drawn concerning the justifiability of the chosen strategies in the context of efforts to arouse interest in Bursa’s work outside Poland.
