Summary/Abstract: One of the important platforms of the ecumenical dialogue between Eastern and Western Churches is monasticism. Despite common roots, its forms and meaning in the Church is different in the West and in the East. These differences concern mostly the role of superior, the institutional aspects of life and reference to the Church authorities. The constant exchange of texts and inspirations has always been a sign of permanent dialogue between two traditions of the same style of life. Today, the common values shared by the monks both in the West and the East, such like “spiritual fatherhood”, culture and education may become helpful not only for the ecumenical dialogue but also in the process of evangelization.
