Summary/Abstract: The article deals with two polar approaches to the literary translation – keeping the values of the source language culture or resisting to them, eliminating all foreign elements from the target text. The article pays special attention to the work by Vadim Rudnev, an author of the so called analytical theory of translation attracting a good deal of criticism of translation theorists and experts. The article also analyzes other points of view on the choice of translation strategies when translating pieces of art. The article analyzes such polar culture-oriented translation strategies as foreignizing and domesticating, philological translation and communicative translation, overt translation and covert translation.
