Summary/Abstract: During September 2016, in the area of the national monument, The archaeological area of the prehistoric settlement in Butmir, rescue archaeology was conducted with the aim of determining the actual area of distribution of the archaeological potential on the site. On this occasion, the planned prospection included the areas of the Agricultural Institute Butmir and K.O. Bare, which occupy an area of 30 hectares. The research was carried out jointly by the consortium comprised of the Institute of Archeology from the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Sarajevo, Department of Archeology from the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Ljubljana and Arhej d.o.o. from Ljubljana. The research was conducted out using a number of different methods, which combined machine-dug test trenches and hand-dug test pits. In parallel with these, test boreholing was conducted at different depths, with the aim of discovering geological and potential archaeological layers, which would serve as basis for getting clearer results on the distribution of archaeological potential and the previous configuration of the terrain. With this in mind, during the implementation of the archaeological prospecting, 134 test pits, 29 test trenches and 35 test boreholes were opened in the aforementioned area, from which 1930 archeological finds from the Neolithic and Bronze Age were collected. The Prospection Plan, drafted in 2015, has diveded the total area allocated for research into four (4) sections (S1, S2, S3 and S4), within which the presence of a large number of finds of the Bronze Age was determined during the research, in contrast with the originally expected dominant representation of the Neolithic period. Almost complete absence of archaeological finds was determined in the area of sections S1 and S3, which is in accordance with the results obtained from geological research, according to which these two areas are part of the formed alluvial deposits of the Željeznica and Tilava rivers. A similar situation is recorded in the southern part of Section 2 (S2), while in the northern part the presence of archaeological finds and remains of the Bronze Age settlement was determined. The northern part of this section was separated from the area of section 4 (S4) by flow regulation of the Tilava River in the modern period, and according to a large number of finds in the area of section 4 (S4) related to the finds from section 2 (S2), it was possible to conclude that this was one site, which constitute a prehistoric settlement whole, that was later divided into two parts. According to the overall results, specifically of the area of sections 2 (S2) and 4 (S4) where the presence of archaeological finds was determined, it is possible to concluded that the archaeological site extends on a surface of 4 hectares and that it is positioned toward east and south in relation to the original defined space where the Butmir culture was once discovered.
