Results of the preliminary archaeological excavations of the Plateau of Visočica near the National Monument of the Old Town Visoki in Visoko

Summary/Abstract: In february of 2017. Institute of archaeology from Faculty of Philosophy in Sarajevo in collaboration with Regional museum of Visoko, conducted a two day archaeological prospection of Visočica plateau in the town of Visoko in central Bosnia and Herzegovina. Archaelogical prospection took place near the protected area of medieval national monument of Old town of Visoki and included several methods of investigation with the aim of determining the density and spatial distribution of archaeological material on the plateau. In an attempt to examine the cultural and geological stratigraphy of the site, method of mechanical drills was applied, as well as method of opening numerous test-pits. Over the course of two-day period,the total of 3 drills and 18 test-pits was opened. As a result, various archaeological material was discovered, dating from prehistoric period to middle ages, which allowed the general conclusion that the archaeological potential of the plateau decreases as it departs away from the protected zone of Old town of Visoki. Among the archaeological finds were also the remains of one human skeleton, dating most probably to medieval times, as it is indicated by presence of several medieval tombstones (stećaks) in its vicinity – the remnants of now devastated medieval necropolis.
