Summary/Abstract: Transsexualism is defined as a gender identity disorder consisting in a discrepancy between the mental sense of identification with a particular gender and biological physique as well as social, assigned at birth and legal gender. For dozens of years various therapies were used to match the physical structure of the body with the internal gender identity, which lacked any efficiency. The currently practised methods of treatment and therapeutic action is a multifaceted gender reassignment process. It encompasses comprehensive diagnostics (medical, psychological, serological and psychiatric), legal aspects of gender change as well as related medical procedures including hormone and surgical treatments. This article focuses on the current legal situation in Poland and discusses legal and penal aspects of surgical gender reassignment as well as transsexualism-related issues on administrative and civil law grounds and planned legislative changes.
