Summary/Abstract: In our day and age, competitiveness cannot possibly be understood as a goal attainable (only) through the use of more workforce, raw materials and machines, as in a – e.g. 19th century – classic economic perspective. We say it cannot be understood, which does not mean it is not understood as such in many parts of the world even today; but, given the advancements of economics, and especially of management science, the prevailing picture describing a successfully competitive company is simply another picture than classical one. That is, a highly competitive firm is to be understood, today, as a complex machinery using basically equal quotas of physical hardware, knowledge, software (e.g. IT mechanisms) and the like, and unquantifiable “stuff” such as expertise, employees’ loyalty and, in one expression, good human relations, both inside the firm and outside it.
