Summary/Abstract: Ioan Popescu, settled in Bârlad after the defeat of the 1948 revolution in Transylvania, became an important representative of the city in the context of the social-political an cultural realities of this place of the country, bringing a valuable contribution to the development of the local and national educational system through his accomplishments: the founding of elementary schools, urban and rural; middle schools and high schools, print shops; the editing of construction projects, newspapers etc. The most important accomplishments were the opening of the first print shop in Bârlad – “Unirea” (1869), the printing of the first local newspaper – “Semănătorul” (1870-1876) and the establishment of the Teacher’s Training College (Şcoala Normală). Declared liberal, he supported agrarian reform, the public education, the development of the light industry and the national cause in his interventions as a representative of Tutova County in the Romanian Parliament. For his accomplishments he was granted various medals and orders. At 110 years from his death, Ioan Popescu remains a worth following example for the younger generations, as an illustrious teacher and patriot.
