Summary/Abstract: Due to its consequences the Sarajevo attempt is a turning point in European history. This event, that was the last straw in a conflict of interests, represented the final phase of the confrontation between the great European powers, about the same for two centuries, but with changing odds and some fluctuations in the hierarchy between them and the claims of hegemony. No matter how we I look at it, a premeditated fact, an error made by the officers assigned to guard the princely couple, or, according to some unorthodox theories, an arrangement of Austria-Hungary at the highest levels, thus a mere pretext, an opportunity of a global confrontation that had been long standing ready to explode, the attempt, and the events that followed it, remain a sequence of errors with fatal effects for the future destiny of the great European empires.
