Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the “Spirit of 1914” in East Central and South Eastern Europe. The prevailing mood seemed to resemble France or Germany. In reality – although mobilization went smoothly everywhere – even at this early stage of what eventually became known as the Great War the picture was far from unequivocal. Nearly all subjects of empires and nation states for the time being demonstrated loyalty towards their state, though tension and doubt combined with hope for a different future could be recorded as well. The enemy depicted as an eternal challenge to own identity certainly propelled perfunctory enthusiasm. Warnings against “future war” – one of the most influential caveats was voiced in Warsaw and reached an international audience – went unnoticed. Everywhere Jews were soon discovered as universal scapegoats. In the coming years imperial national and occupation policies unwillingly stimulated disintegrative tendencies, ethnicizing the human fabric all over the region.
