Summary/Abstract: The idea of a fundamental duality applicable to everything is born long before Christianity, which is an heir in this respect only. The idea of a duality of human nature - a mortal and material body and an immortal and immaterial soul - has endured as faith bedrock, being passed on through tradition in spite of the doubts, reserves, or denials the contributions of culture, knowledge and science may arise. It is not easy to free oneself (is it necessary?) from millennial habits; but belief in the existence of an immortal soul independent of its body can hardly stay what it once was.
