Summary/Abstract: One of the ways to save industrial buildings located in cities is conversion: the aforementioned buildings get to keep their defining formal elements, but get attributed new functions – mostly social and cultural in nature. The satisfaction of habitation increases, and agglomerations become reinvigorated while conserving their past. The process of conversion has other aspects as well: it is an alternative to the expansion of cities and saves both funds and labor. This phenomenon has gathered enough amplitude to generate concepts and analyses capable of supporting the efficiency of the attempts to save the industrial sites and ensure their urbanistic (aesthetically) remodeling.Building conversions happen in many countries throughout the world, some with more success than others. This article will talk about a few examples from Romania and elsewhere. The inhabitants of cities interested in building conversions can thus discover that the past is not dead and obsolete, but rather it can be remodeled to the benefit of communities. Through conversions an important dimension of communication is thus maintained –the relationship of people with their own past.
