Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the special program which European Union has devised for accession of the Western Balkan countries (Albania and countries of former Yugoslavia, except Slovenia). A specific integration plan has been devised for these countries primarily due to safety issues within the region. Regional program has been created called the stabilization and accession program. It is used as the framework for orientation of the Western Balkan countries until their full membership in the European Union. It is necessary to enable the less developed countries do catch up with the developed countries and to promote convergence of economic variables among countries.
