Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the way in which the problem of free will finds a place in current philosophical debate. The three main trends related to that problem – compatibilism, libertarianism and hard incompatibilism – are presented with the works of contemporary American philosophers John Martin Fischer, Robert Kane and Derk Pereboom. The difficulty lies in finding a method of studying the question of determinacy/indeterminacy of events and processes without falling into metaphysical constructions that are unacceptable to current philosophical thought; thus some authors propose solutions circumventing the question of causal determinism while others rely exclusively to achievements in other realms of scientific knowledge. The lack of consensus on method can generate doubts as to whether this question can be resolved with the instruments of contemporary philosophy. Nevertheless the debate on it still goes on today, which shows the importance of the question and the impossibility to declare it closed for philosophical thinking.
