Summary/Abstract: In this paper I will deliver a brief sketch of what I am callingthe „prehistory” of the authenticity, by investigating some of the Platonic andrespectively Augustinian ideas that influenced the modern concept of being true tooneself. Authenticity is an undoubtedly modern concept, which stems from the intuitionthat each person has her unique way of being human, but its origins could be traced asback as to the Greek Antiquity and the fourth century Christian Patristics. In whatfollows I will try to reconstruct these origins, and at the same time I will brieflyexamine both the similarities and the distinctions between the “prehistoric” concept of authenticity and the modern one.
