Summary/Abstract: The author takes Miszlivetz’s idea as his starting point, according to which the main chance of a democracy in peril could lie in civil society. In other words, a self-renewing democracy would be needed in our age as well. His essay searches for an answer to the question whether the current concept of civil society opens a way for the widening and the reinterpretation of the democratic space, keeping it open. This can be realized if civil society appears as an arena of public life, where the different actors, ideas, values, aspirations and interests can freely confront and influence each other.
