Summary/Abstract: Modern economic and social changes pose different challenges to marriage and family, some of which are new(est) forms of media coverage and reporting patterns. Consequently, the traditional family is included in the platform with altered media coverage. This paper will, through the context of social situation in Croatia, based on a referendum on the constitutional definition of marriage, illustrate the importance of media and consequently offer answers to questions: are traditional families, through media, becoming marginalized and social stereotypes and are media themselves creators of certain social norms? Referendum campaign, media reports on the activities of the civic association U ime obitelji and finally, the referendum itself did stir intensive and polarizing emotional reactions of the public. Empirical research of content analysis of the following daily newspapers: Jutarnji list, Večernji list, 24sata and Novi list and Slobodna Dalmacija for period of May-December 2013, will show to what extent were media (un)biased and (un)professional, and whether the given topic was the foundation of sensationalism and inappropriate reporting in relation to the Code of honor of Croatian Journalists’ Association.
