Summary/Abstract: Turkey, being the southeastern pillar for the NATO during the „Cold War“, has gained geo-strategic importance during the last one and a half centuries due to its geographic position. It is embedded between the various conflict zones of the area: none of its frontiers, which are 2,753 km long, are without any relation to a conflict situation - except the frontier to Bulgaria. This refers to several Caucasian states in the Northeast or Southeast and leads via Iran and Iraq all the way to Syria. Turkey is also represented in the “Big Game” around the Caspian crude oil. The Turkish governments of the past and the presence try to utilize the situation to strengthen the international importance of the country but at the same time – despite strong American pressure – not to get involved into the existing conflicts and to build up good relations to all neighbouring states.
