THE BENEFITS OF USING THE Q SORT METHOD IN ANALYZING THE SOCIAL PERCEPTION OF RISKS TO NATIONAL SECURITY

Summary/Abstract: This paper aims to present a number of benefits of the inter-disciplinary approach in analyzing the social perception of national security risks, identified during the course of our doctoral research pilot study. Thus, in order to conduct the pilot study on the social perception of risks to national security we have chosen to use the Q sort method as the investigation technique, since it provides a number of advantages.One of these rests in the applicability of the Q sort method for this type of research, both in terms of subject proposed for investigation - perceptions being par excellence the attribute of subjectivity - and in terms of size a doctoral research project involves – the Q sort methodology application involving a small number of respondents for data collection.On the other hand, another advantage of the Q sort method is provided by the availability of the instruments used. We have identified in this respect free software tools for the smooth application of the method, from data collection to the analysis of the results.
