Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the emotional breadth and depth of the notion of little homeland presented by Stanisław Ossowski on the basis of Upper Silesian empirical material. On the one hand it is connected to a sense of safety which, in its extreme case, is located even in one’s allocated part of a barrack bunk in a Nazi or Communist concentration camp. It suggests that although it is tied to the ideology of ˋBlut und Bodenˊ, it may be applied to a localness within a large city. Starting with an analysis of the exclusive character of the ˋlittle home landˊ of the Upper Silesians revealed in the author’s own research indicates two types: a closed homeland, an exclusive one which in extreme cases may lead to fascist ecology, and a small inclusive homeland, receptive towards all those willing of different origins and different cultures.
