Summary/Abstract: Strategic communication, a new concept imported by NATO from the institutional vocabulary used by the US, aimed primarily at insuring the coherence of communication, at a strategic politico-military level, at enhancing the effectiveness of actions meant to influence the perceptions and behavior of the target audience. This article contains an analysis of the manner in which reference documents in the field of security and defense in Romania are viewing communication as a part of the informational element of national power. In this context, we have shown which barriers must be overcome in order to integrate the concept into Romanian strategies and doctrines, and the benefits that Romania might have by using strategic communication as a strategic weapon in its efforts to promote its national interests.
