Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to comparatively analyze the development of researches on the Orthodox Church music that have been conducted in Bulgaria and Serbia since the 1960s. It is significant to see that interests in the old church music of Orthodox nations were revived under the unfavourable socio-political settings of socialist periods in both countries. The paper examines the chronology of these interests and some fundamental directions of the conducted researches, the similarities between the methodologies applied by experts from the two neighbouring countries, such as paleographic, textual and structural analyses of old neumatic scripts, focus on explaining the influences of Byzantine chant on the music of Slav countries, on noticing the bilateral Bulgarian-Russian and Serbian-Russian music relations, etc. As a key convergence point between the Bulgarian and Serbian experts in this field, the Bydgoszcz international festival and congress Musica Antiqua Europae Orientalis was presented. The directions of research on the Bulgarian and Serbian music are comparatively observed in the context of wider analysis on the Central and Eastern Europe old music.
