Barriers to doing business as determinants of financial performance of construction sector companies

Summary/Abstract: The article presents the results of interrelationship analyses between the indicator of intensity of barriers to conducting business and the assessments of financial situation of companies in the construction sector. There was conducted a descriptive analysis of the formation of barriers and the financial situation of enterprises over time and in the breakdown the voivodeships. The basis of the analyzes presented in the article were the data of the Central Statistical Office from business tendency survey conducted on a monthly basis in the construction sector. The time horizon of the analysis presented in the article covered the period from January 2011 to January 2014. Strength of the relationship between the condition of the companies in the construction sector and an indicator of the intensity of the barriers for the individual voivodeships proved to be diverse. For fifteen voivodeships however was confirmed a statistically significant relationship between these two variables. The sensitivity of construction companies to changes of business conditions in the various regions is not identical. The position of the voivodeships in comparison with the other terms of the intensity of barriers to doing business does not always translate into an identical position in the created on the basis of assessments of the financial situation ranking. Analysis of the results indicates that obstacles for doing business impact on the financial situation of companies in the construction sector in a synergistic way. From this point of view an increase in the intensity of the barriers about the unit (mostly due to an increase in the most or almost all barriers) causes a decrease of more than a unit in ratings of the financial situation.
