Summary/Abstract: Tomasz Fryzeł analyzes the spectacle around the demotion of Alfred Dreyfus (January 5, 1895), a French captain of Jewish origin, who in 1894 was wrongly sentenced to the punishment of demotion and deportation to a penal colony. The author describes the socio‑political situation inFrance in the second half of the 19th century, paying special attention to the situation of the Jews and the effects of the Treaty of Frankfurt. Itdescribes the preparations for the ceremony and its trajectory. Referring to contemporary press reports and iconographic materials, he notes thatthe spectacle was complemented by the media’s involvement, whichtook the form of a parallel performance – it was a ceremony seemingly in line with the modern republican order, but presented in the press aspremodern public humiliation.
