Summary/Abstract: This article surveys one of the least known, poor squatter settlements, “The Yolaltı Barakalar Street” of İstanbul. Although Nişantaşı is one of the wealthiest residential area in İstanbul, it is in this district. The study examined the socio-economic profiles of the people settled in the mentioned squatter neighborhood. Their migration to İstanbul, their background stories, the living conditions in the cottages, their relations with each other and their elite neighbors were also investigated. Consequently the settlement could be compared with other shanty districts of İstanbul. Because the settlement is old and the inhabitants have lived there for a very long time, the area displays different characteristics from a typical squatter district. On the other hand with its material and physical conditions it is not well adjusted to the neighborhood. At the same time the study includes projections for he future of the area.
