THE VISUAL LANGUAGE OF THE ICON: A SYMBOLIC AND CONFESSIONAL PERSPECTIVE

Summary/Abstract: The most suitable means for valorization of the visage, as a means for escalation of the personality crisis suffered by man in the society of today, is offered by the theology of the icon. Through the icon, the Church offers the contemporary man the possibility to escape from the suffocating, heavy and dehumanizing routine, in their efforts to recover their divine effigy, faded away as a consequence of worldly pleasures and worries. The icon opens up, before man’s own eyes, the gateway to heavenly eternity, the earth-like existence is suspended on the icon’s universe, thereby making the way to a perspective for confessional reality.
