Summary/Abstract: The works of Soviet Russian composer Dimitri Shostakovich have unusually been considered as political propaganda, which conveys the messages of communist ideology. Most of the studies only examined his music, and ignored the multidimensional (social and political) content of the compositions. However, in order to understand the Russian conception of art in the 20th century, one needs to adopt a plural perspective on this very complex and differentiated milieu, essentially shaped by the interaction between artistic technique and ideological content.
