Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the concept of ‘private homeland’ introduced into Polish sociology by S. Ossowski, and the theoretical and practical applications of the corresponding notion of ‘little homeland’ used nowadays. The area of empirical phenomena described by these concepts requires a sociological turn towards an idiographic approach, detail, and what is individual and unique. In this sense, the sociological study of little homelands requires the use of methodologies and ways of interpreting which take into account not only the importance of the search for theoretical generalisations (notional apprehension, in the terminology of J. H. Newman), but also the importance of the concrete, individual and idiosyncratic (real) apprehension. In this approach, sociology approximates film (especially documentary film) and literature, i.e. the subject it describes is not only society as a reality sui generis, but a concrete person, their neighbours and closest social environment in which they live.
