Summary/Abstract: Polish legislation contains provisions thanks to which the residents of localadministrative units may, in various ways, become involved in local governance. Today these provisions enable rather loose shaping of the relationsbetween the authorities and the inhabitants: from examples where the inhabitants’ role is entirely passive and is limited to the receipt of information regarding decisions taken by the authorities, to the model involving activationamong residents and their direct participation in the taking of important decisions. In this article we take a look at both the legal regulation of such options, and their application in practice. The purpose of this analysis is to demonstrate the perception of relations between the authorities and residents in Polish local communities.
