A Ball or a Gramophone? – Educational Toy at the Exhibition of Games and Toys in Dynasy, Warsaw, in 1902, from the Perspective of the Press of the Time

Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to present educational toys presented in the special section at the exhibition of children’s games and toys in Warsaw, in Dynasy, in 1902. In order to answer the question regarding the criteria for selection of toys by the pedagogical commission, and the way the work of the group was brought closer to Warsaw residents, I analyzed the press material from 1902, limiting myself to 3 months. They were as follows: September (before the start of the exhibition), September / October (duration of the exhibition), October / November (after the exhibition). I have used such magazines as “Gazeta Rzemieślnicza”, “Kurier Warszawski”, “Moje pisemko”, “Przegląd Tygodniowy Życia Społecznego, Literatury i Sztuk Pięknych”, “Przyjaciel dzieci”, “Tygodnik Ilustrowany”, “Ziarno”. In the introduction I described the place of the exhibition and the department. Then I presented the pedagogical commision and its tasks. The main part of the paper is the description of the toys selected by the committees. I have also included some opinions on the work of the pedagogical commision, which break through in the articles of Warsaw newspapers of 1902.
