Summary/Abstract: Introduction and aim: a doctor’s profession is entailed with high social expectations. It is well-known that physician should be conscientious, responsible and professional. The aim of the research is to know and analyse motivation of medical students from Poland regarding making decision about future specialty. Material and method: The research was conducted among medical students in Poland. 560 people answered the online anonymous survey. Results: The motivation to study medicine was different among women and men. Female students indicated that their primary motivation was to help people, male students are governed by social status of being a doctor. Conclusions: Most of the interviewed foresee their future career with a non-surgical specialty. Interests, job market demands and opportunity of career’s development are the most important factors when it comes to choosing specialisation. When choosing a specialty the dominating issues concern interests, demand in the job market and opportunity for career development. Motivation for being a physician is very often pro-social. It is important to observe directions and factors which may have influence on changing motivation. For the doctors to be a job is not only a way of earning money but essentially a source of personal fulfillment and satisfaction.
