Summary/Abstract: N.A.T.O. has been adapting to the political changes in the international environment since the early 1990s and has been the main stability and security factor in Europe. For the countries of central and south-eastern Europe, the Alliance has become a source of stability and a credible exponent of democratic principles and values. The launch of the Partnership for Peace (PfP) allowed the former communist countries to participate in joint training activities with the army of N.A.T.O. Parallel to the development of the PfP, which was an effective means of conceptually and actively harmonizing the defence capabilities made available to ensure stability and security within an expanded and integrated framework, since 1993, the United States have consistently contributed to the development of a strong European pillar within the North Atlantic Alliance. It was closely linked to the establishment of military capabilities that were "separable but not separated" by the Alliance.
