Summary/Abstract: The semantic capacity of the terms transmedia and transmediality, their openness and ambiguity, makes these useful and operational tools for describing the dynamic reconfiguration of the field of contemporary art. The term “transmedia”, which appears in the title of this special issue of Cultural Studies Review, is used in a broad sense. Firstly, it refers to the discourse of convergence culture, capturing the dynamics of the intermingling of technologies, distribution platforms, communication and creative strategies, audience behaviours and production models. Secondly, the term designates diverse artistic practices that go beyond the boundaries of the specific medium.
