Summary/Abstract: I will never forget my first encounter with Chuck Goodwin. We were both attendees at a conference organized by George Psathas and Jeff Coulter at Boston University: The 1st Summer Institute on Ethnomethodology and Conversation Analysis. It was June 1975, humid and stifl ing, and there were to be two days of presentations. Both Harold Garfinkel and Harvey Sacks – in Boston for teaching at the summer school, of which the Institute was an adjunct – were present as audience members. It was my first direct contact with them, and indeed, with anyone doing ethnomethodology or conversation analysis in America. And I was about to discover what ‘detail’ in the analysis of interaction could look like!
