Summary/Abstract: I have had the good fortune to meet Chuck Goodwin several times. First at UCLA on the invitation of Don Favareau in 2002, and later again when he presented a wonderful paper entitled “The multi-modal organization of human action” at the Seventh Annual International Biosemiotics Conference in Groningen, Netherlands in 2007. Although trained as a biochemist, for me it has always been a pleasure to listen to Chuck’s thinking. It is not only fascinating in itself, and a good corrective to the general bio-dominance of our conference discussions, but it has also most of the time been very close to my own thinking, as I hope to show in this little essay.
