Make Yourself a Universe, Or Anatomy of the Contemporary Comic Book Film

Summary/Abstract: The book by Tomasz Żaglewski „Kinowe uniwersum superbohaterów. Analiza współczesnego filmu komiksowego” [„Cinematic universe of superheroes. Analysis of the contemporary comic book film”] (2017) is an attempt to formulate a theoretical discourse dedicated to the contemporary comic book film. According to the author, in recent years, we can observe an unusual development of this meta-genre, which differs from its earlier forms by seriously treating the comic book prototype and transferring the narrative and visual structures of the comics to the screen. Żaglewski believes that the fundamental features of these films are hybridity, paratextuality and transmediality, together forming a “univers(e)al triangle”. The author presents original analyses of this phenomenon, referring to such films as “Dark Knight”, “Avengers” or “Deadpool”. He also thoroughly discusses the circumstances surrounding their production, the impact of market mechanisms, as well as the context of their reception.
