Summary/Abstract: Game narration can exist in many forms and be contained in many different elements. It is worth emphasizing, above all, as ludonarrative – contained in the mechanisms of the game itself, as well as the framework narrative, which occurs in isolation from the interactive and immersive elements. Developers and game researchers have long considered the use of their narrative to broaden and popularize historical knowledge. The authors of the Age of Empires II seemingly did not have such ambitions – in the game, we can put together in an open conflict such distant civilizations as the Aztecs and the Huns. However, when we look at the work of the Ensemble Studios, we notice that the historical narrative appears in it, almost at every step, both in the graphic, text and sound as well as in the game mechanic itself. Using a very specific example of Byzantine civilization, we decided to analyze the various aspects of this title, trying to extract individual elements contained in it, that conceal historical knowledge.
