Summary/Abstract: Branach-Kallas situates the concept of trauma in the context of World War I. She discusses cultural trauma theory, illustrating its basic characteristics with examples from the cultural history of the Great War. The article also analyses the representation of individual and cultural trauma in selected British and French novels by Louisa Young, Pat Barker, Marc Dugain and Pierre Lemaitre. The central figure of the facially disfigured soldier becomes an epitome of individual and cultural trauma, inspiring a critique of the nation-state and an exploration of (post)modern identities.
