Summary/Abstract: This study focuses on the development of the elementary népiskola (“people’s school”) system of the Cistibiscan Reformed Church District, between 1850 and the beginning of World War I. It presents the process of turning the underdeveloped school system of the district into a modern system compliant with the legal requirements. Thus, the work musters the school system, its equipment, the children subject to the compulsory education, and their willingness to attend school, the qualification of the teachers, and the curriculum of the schools.
