Summary/Abstract: While the importance of international evaluation of students’ performance are evident, national monitoring of their performance give clear evidences of the performances of the national system. The Hungarian system is regularly monitored by the National Evaluation of Competencies, a process that annually monitors the students’ competencies in reading and arithmathics (12, 14 and 16-year olds, entire student population in the national system). In the course of this national monitoring, independent (student performance) and dependent (socio-economic) variables are also collected. The latest are especially important for the policy makers at national level. On the basis of the findings of the national monitorings the author analyses a subsystem of the national education system, that is the church-based schools. She points out the differences between the dependent variables between the state owned and the the church-owned sector as well as among the various schools of the various religious organisations. The results help understand the pedagogical added values of the church-owned education in Hungary.
